Background

East Gwillimbury, ON

The only thing separating Sharon Hills Park from the highway used to be a 1.5-metre chain-link fence. Residents of Sharon, Ontario, were concerned about the excessive noise from the Highway 404 extension. After its opening in 2014, a more effective solution was advocated for and the province responded with the construction of 2.67-kilometre noise barrier to address the issue.

Stretching from Green Lane to Farr Avenue, the Durisol absorptive noise barrier was designed specifically to reduce traffic noise for the homes adjacent to the highway. Durisol played a key role in the noise barrier’s design and supply, guiding the project team on the elevations and necessary engineering for the wall’s foundation. A five-metre high ground-mounted wall was deemed necessary to achieve effective noise barrier performance.

Acrylite Soundstop MASH TL-4 Structure-mounted Noise Barrier System was incorporated into a section of the barrier across the bridge to maintain views for safety purposes.

The project also features strategically placed access doors along the long stretch of the wall. These access doors are crucial for safety and maintenance purposes, providing essential access for emergency responders, regular inspection, and repair work. By integrating these practical features, this vital infrastructure project promotes a quieter and more serene environment for those living near the highway while reflecting a commitment to community well-being through effective noise management and thoughtful design.
